The MFJ-299 Microphone Is A Multiple 3 Radio Microphone With Channel Up And Down Buttons, VU Meter,Equalizer And More.
When We Purchased The MFJ-299 Microphone We Did Not Read Or See Any Warnings About Connecting All Three Radios At The Same Time. We Thought The Microphone Was Designed To Be Able Connect To 3 Radios At The Same Time And Control The Radios Independently.
We Contacted MFJ About The Microphone Through MFJ Web Site And Got A Ticket Number For Our Question About Can 3 Radios Be Connected At The Same Time And The Service Tech Replied You Could Connect Multiple Radios At The Same Time And They Are Isolated.

What Is The ABC Switch For Just To Switch Radio Types And Nothing Else Or Does IT Control Something? What Does It Turn On Or Off? The Cuttable Red Jumper Wire For Time Out Is Not In The Manual What Is It For? Can You Power The Mike From The Radios Mic Power Line? What Updates Changes Were Done On The Main Board Unit For? Is There Any Isolation Between The Connector Plugs For The Different Radios? What Is The Wiring Diagram For The Mic Plugs Connectors? | 1. yes, you can connect all three radios at the same time, but you can only use one radio at a time. 2. The ABC switch is to switch between radios and nothing else. 3. ??? not sure about this, don\'t know anything about cutting any wires there. 4. no, the desktop mic requires its battery for power. 5. no updates have been made since we started offering these mics. 6. yes, there is isolation, so using with three different rigs is fine, but you must only use one rig at a time. 7. we do not have wiring diagrams for the cables. we do not manufacture them here. it is a taiwanese import. 8. yes, i can send that to you by mail. sorry, not in electronic format. provide address. |
Once We Received The Microphone We Decided To First Tested The MFJ-299 Microphone Connections Ourselves Before Hooking The Radios Up To The Microphone To See If There Was Real Full Electronic Isolation Between The 3 Microphone Output Connectors Just In Case.
Not To Our Surprise We Found There Was No Electrical Isolation Between Any Of The Microphone Connections On The MFJ-299 At All And You Would Need To Turn Off The Other Radios Or You Could Possibly Damage The Radios Due To The Mixed Radio Voltage Lines At The Microphone Connectors.
We Was Disappointed With MFJ Not Knowing Their Product Fully There Was No Warning Listed In The MFJ-299 Owner's Manual About Not Being Able To Connect The Three Microphone Cables All At The Same Time Or A Service Schematics Included To See Or Discover This.
With Our Over 43 Years Experience In High Technical Electronics, Building, Designing, Complete Electronic Services, Two Way Radio Business, Computer Business,Improving And Modifying Electronics And Knowing Allot Of Things In The World Are Not Always Designed Correctly, And Most Things Can Be Redesigned,Modified And Improved.

We Would Be Modifying Something To Make It Better, Project 100 Million And 1, Sorry Lost Count.
Again No Schematics On Hand Have Not Received Any Yet And No Technical Help At All As Usual Just 100% Real High Technical Electronic Experience Testing And Tracing And Figuring It Out.
Knowing Some Radios Supply 5v,8v Or More Power To The Microphone Connectors For Added Feature Control Options, Microphone Amps And TouchTone Encoders This Could Be A Problem With MFJ-299 If You Hookup Some Yaesu Radios That Supplies 5v To The Microphone Connector Of Your Radio And You Connect A Icom Radio That Supplies 8v To The Icom Microphone Connector At The Same Time You Could Damage The Radios By Having Them Connected To The MFJ-299 Microphone Since The Microphone Connectors Do Get Connected Together Inside The MFJ-299 Microphone.
Inside The MFJ-299 All Three Microphone Connector's 3 Power Lines, 3 PTT Lines And 3 Channel Up And Down Lines Are Connected Together With No Electrical Isolation Between The Radio's Microphone Lines At All!
If You Even Had The Other Radios Turned Off You Will Be Connecting All Microphone Voltage Output Lines Together Through The MFJ-299 Microphone Connectors, (Some Yaesu Microphone's Connector On The Radio Has A 5v Regulator Output Line And Some Icom Radio Microphone's Connector Has 8v Regulator Line Out, Some Kenwood Radio's Has 8v Line Out Also. All Three Radios Send Power Into The MFJ-299 Without Any Protection Or Fuses And Can Pass Through The Microphone To The Other Connected Radios.
Also Note If You Had The 2 Other Radios Turned Off You Could Be Sending Power Into The Turned Off Connected Radios.
Redesign Results,
Before We Started Our Redesign Modification You Could Not Transmit Separately From One Radio, All Radios Would Transmit If They Were On At The Same Time, You Could Not Change 1 Radio's Channel Without Changing All 3 Radios At The Same Time, And Power From The 3 Radios Microphone Power Output Accessories Lines Were Connected Together Inside The MFJ-299 Microphone Which Could Cause Possible Damages Or Harm Your Radios.
Now With Our Modifications We Have A Electrically Isolated Microphone That We Have 2 Radios Hooked Up And Powered Up At The Same Time!
With Our Modifications We Made The ABC Switch Between Control Of The Radios Separately,
When The Switch Is Set To (A) Position For Icom Radio The Microphone's PTT Controls Only The Icom Radio And The Channel Up And Down Buttons Only Control The Icom And Not The Other Radios.
We Can Switch The ABC Switch To (C) Yaesu And It Only Controls And Transmits Only On The Yaesu!
Also When We Switch The Microphone To The Off Position It Stops The Radios From Transmitting, You Still Can Change Channels But The PTT Buttons Don't Work, A Nice Little Safety Feature, No Accidental Dead Keys Or Someone Bumping The PTT Button!
We Now Have Separate Full Control Of What Radio We Want To Transmit On And Be Able Change Channels On All From The MFJ-299 Microphone!
Right Now We Only Have 2 Radios Hooked Up And Can Use 3 Radios With Extra Modifications. The Icom And Yaesu, We Also Made A Modification To Hook Up Our Big ON-AIR Transmit Light For All Radios, The Microphone Does Have A Small L.E.D Tx Indicator On It But We Added A PTT Transmit Output Line To Switch On Our Big Light Up ON AIR Sign Seen Above!
And Oh The Red Cuttable Wire Inside The Battery Door That We Asks MFJ Tech Support About That MFJ Did Not Know About,(Answer 3.Above) It Is A 2 Minute Transmit Timeout Option Disable.
We Wish Manufactures Would Make Their Employees Study And Know Their Product Line More Better But Now A Days Most Employees Do Not Care And It Is Just A Job, Hit The Time Clock In And Out And Who Cares Attitude With No Follow Through Checks.
Over All The MFJ-299 Is A Nice Full Feature Microphone, With Some Modifications It Can Be Made Even Better Like We Have Done!
The MFJ-299 Features And Capability Is Not Advertise Correctly,
Many Might Think It Can Independently Control Multiple Radios At The Same Time Something Like The MFJ-1263 Microphone Switch Units That Are 1 Mic 2 Radios Switch Boxes.
What We Like That Makes The MFJ-299 Microphone Nice Is It's Many Features, Low Price Compared To Some Other Manufactures Microphones!
The MFJ-299 Has A 3 Radios A,B,C Switch, Also A Microphone On/Off, Equalizer On Switch, Plus Microphone Audio Volume.
Most Radio Manufacturer's Microphones Are Wired Differently, And Can Need Special Wiring Hookups.
Offering A Truly Universal Microphone Is A Major Design Task And Can Be Near Impossible But The MFJ-299 Does Come Close To It And Probably Can Accommodate Most Multiple Radios Hookups With Extra Design Changes.
